See the difference in cards purchased from mega-online companies vs. small batch hand typeset Letterpress.
My client came to me with some pretty cute cards she purchased on minted.com (comparable to Moo or simiiiar mega-online printers). She just updated her website and wanted something ultra chic to hand clients looking to invest in her high-end editorial style photography. theamykate.com & @theamykate Her work is beautiful!!!
FONTS & TYPESETTING!
I wanted to match these cards to the fonts on her new website, some pretty bold and edgy sans-serif’s, while still utilizing the traditional typeset method with our in-house fonts, versus a digital design and plate.
I chose to use our in-house Show Card Bold font for the front “A K” and the back, “AMYKATE”. There was a lot of trial and error figuring out how to utilize our fonts the best and in the end I decided to use our Franklin Gothic 12pt. for all of her contact info.
*Typesetting is done by selecting each letter, one at a time to compose the finished product. You’ll see in the example photo that spacing is also a part of the overall product required to get your press properly locked in the press. It’s time consuming but the results are always WORTH IT! When it comes to letterpress, paper is of the UTMOST importance. I wanted them to be ultra chic so we went with subtle and transparent grey ink on 220lb Cranes Lettra Grey paper.
The effect was immediate! An adoration for the edginess of the font and the softness of the paper. These fonts are great because their hard lines create an AMAZING impression on the paper and makes a little go a long way. (i.e. the front of the card looks so much bolder than the “before” becasue of how hard the impression, even though the letters themselves are a little simpler.
DO YOU NEED A BEFORE & AFTER?
I’m always looking to take your previous or current card designs and logos and make them the perfect fit for your brand. Taking great branding the extra mile with the impression of letterpress is an investment but it speaks worlds to all of your clients, new or loyal.
